The Office of Cultural Engagement (OCE) at the College of Arts and Sciences offers this work study opportunity working directly with media, programming and events of two off-campus art centers supported by Syracuse University: La Casita Cultural Center & the Point of Contact Gallery This position will allow the student to act as the Web-Content & Social Media developer for two off-campus centers, La Casita Cultural Center and the Point of Contact Gallery. The student will be working with the Executive Director (ED) of Cultural Engagement at the College of Arts and Sciences, and/or her staff as any particular project may require. The student will work on site on a regular basis, within a weekly schedule and/or to maximize efficiency of the project, some work will be assigned for the student to complete in his or her own time. The Office of Cultural Engagement is located in the Warehouse Bldg. in downtown Syracuse (350 W Fayette St. Syracuse NY 13202) and so is the Point of Contact Gallery. La Casita Cultural Center is located just a couple of blocks from there, at 109 Otisco St., Syracuse NY 13204. Both locations are conveniently accessible through the Connective Corridor bus. This work study opportunity will allow the student to learn about the organization, its policies and procedures. The student will receive detailed instructions as to expectations for the work product, and receive regular feedback on productivity and quality of the work. The student will be expected to attend some of the staff meetings, news conferences, and other events. He or she will need to understand both center’s operations and be able to propose ideas and plans to develop content for both center's social media campaigns. The student will be expected to work independently on assigned projects while frequently reviewing progress with the ED.

Job Description

Under general supervision from the Executive Director, the Web Designer is responsible for development support, design, maintenance and website updates using Syracuse University’s current applications.

Responsibilities

• Follow existing design concept in the creation of new pages regarding upcoming events and new releases.
• Maintains, and monitors the center’s web site, including setting up additional pages and pop up windows as required.
• Establishes locate-ability by registering with multiple search engines.
• Develops site content and graphics by coordinating with copywriters and graphic artists; designing images, icons, banners, audio enhancements, etc.
• Analyzes and provides suggestions regarding page layouts.
• Upgrades site by updating content and graphics; monitoring performance and results; identifying and evaluating improvement options; introducing new technology; maintaining links.
• Designs site navigation prototypes for review and approval.
• Designs, edits, and enhances images suitable for publishing over the Internet.
• Creates PDF (Portable Document Format) for forms, documents, and/or large publications.
• Assists with special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Intermediate knowledge and ability in Web site design.
• Intermediate knowledge of programming languages strongly preferred but not required.
• Experience with current browsers, (Google, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox).
• Knowledge and ability in the use of up to date Development Applications.

• Strategic planner with strong organizational skills required.
• A self-starter with the ability to work independently without close supervision.
• Ability to work with others in a team environment.
