Job Description

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) is the first interdisciplinary national institute in higher education focused on the social, economic, education, and policy issues impacting veterans and their families. Through its professional staff and experts, the IVMF delivers leading programs in career, vocational, and entrepreneurship education and training, while also conducting actionable research, policy analysis, and program evaluations. The IVMF also supports communities through collective impact efforts that enhance delivery and access to services and care. The Institute, supported by a distinguished advisory board, along with public and private partners, is committed to advancing the lives of those who have served in America’s armed forces and their families.

Student assistance is needed in the communications department of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), specifically in the areas of print communication and design. Students in this position will report to both the Director of Communications and Senior Communication Designer and Publication Coordinator. They will occasionally be tasked to support institute-wide activities.

Duties will include assistance with designing print and electronic collateral for IVMF and the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs (OVMA). Work will be completed at the institute (150 Crouse Drive, Syracuse, NY 13244), with limited opportunities for independent work upon demonstration of high levels of personal and professional responsibility.

Responsibilities

Communications, Design and Layout – Help in designing and laying out print and electronic collateral for programs, research, community engagement areas along with the leadership team.

Design collateral in Adobe Creative suite that meets the mission and vision of the institute along with providing support to the institute’s partners and stakeholders.

Conduct photo research that captures the essence of the institute, its mission areas.

Assist with creating and updating existing PowerPoint presentations that are shown to partners, stakeholders and visitors of the institute.

Design various publications, electronic publications such as one-pagers, brochures, newsletters, research briefs, reports, invitations, exhibits, conference materials, etc.

Design templates in Microsoft Word.

Other duties assigned by the Director of Communications and Senior Communications Designer and Publication Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

Excellent design and communications skills including use of Adobe Creative Suite.
Excellent writing skills including grammar, punctuation and creativity.
Excellent communications skills
Strong time management and organizational skills
Good in multi-tasking
Familiarity in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word
Ability to communicate professionally in person, on the phone and via e-mail
Demonstrated level of personal responsibility
Interest in or commitment to the cause of serving our nation’s veterans

Job Specific Qualifications

Submit cover letter, resumé, academic schedule and a communications sample demonstrating design skills used in Abode Creative Suite (including Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) along with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint. A portfolio of work maybe required along with resumé demonstrating experience with communications, design, layout, etc.
