Job Description

Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies (The iSchool, see http://ischool.syr.edu) is soliciting applications from professionals in data science to join its renowned and interdisciplinary faculty. This position is open to professionals who can serve as a Professor of Practice. The successful candidate will join our “Faculty of One” in a highly collegial environment that stresses collaboration.

We seek colleagues who can provide a strong contribution to teaching data science and who can also deepen and extend our strengths in information management. We see data science as a broad area that includes data analytics, visualization, and data management. Data scientists are crucial to solving big data problems in areas as diverse as clinical research, defense intelligence, customer behavior, medical diagnosis, and risk management. The iSchool currently offers an MS in Applied Data Science, an MS in Enterprise Data Systems, Certificate of Advanced Study in Data Science, and minor in data analytics.

We have teaching needs for many of our data science courses, including courses such as Introduction to Data Science, Scripting for Data Analysis, Information Visualization, Advanced Information Analytics, and Database Management Systems. Professors of Practice teach three courses a semester.

Located at the center of picturesque Syracuse University, the iSchool is at the cutting edge of scholarship and instruction. The iSchool has eight degree programs and an enrollment of 36 doctoral students, 570 masters’ students and 730 undergraduates, led by 47 full-time faculty and 100 part-time faculty. Our faculty have recognized strengths in information retrieval, information management, library programs and services, natural language processing, computational social science, online communities and civic participation, new forms of organization and collaboration, information and communications policy, smart energy systems, digital literacy, information and network security, globalization, entrepreneurship, social media, and data science. The iSchool hosts six research centers and laboratories. The SU-ADVANCE program (http://suadvance.syr.edu/) provides extensive mentoring services for women faculty in STEM disciplines.

Qualifications

Candidates for a Professor of Practice position must show significant professional experience in data science or a related area and have a graduate degree in information science or related discipline. Professor of Practice provide unique contributions to the iSchool in teaching and service.

Job Specific Qualifications

Professors of Practice have an obligation to maintain their involvement in the professional world, which may be accomplished through a variety of opportunities including conference presentations, project work or consulting, and works of authorship.

Their contribution to the faculty includes participation at the professional level both in and outside the university.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will be a teaching load of three courses per semester, as well as advising, participation in School and University committees, and other duties as assigned by the Dean. Professors of Practice are also expected to be actively engaged in professional activities appropriate to their area of expertise.
