Job Description

The School of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. Appointment to begin August 2018.

The School of Design is home to programs that offer BFAs in Fashion, Environmental + Interior and Communications Design, a BID in Industrial + Interactive Design as well as an MA in Museum Studies and an MFA in Design. In 2015 the School of Design introduced a dedicated first year experience that provides a focused design studio-based education critical to the development of multidisciplinary practice and a solid understanding of the fundamental elements of the design disciplines. To enhance our current offerings, we are developing a new undergraduate BS in Design. This will provide a counterpoint offer to the other BFA/BID offerings, allowing students to curate a multidisciplinary course of study while at the same time fully leveraging all that the University has to offer.
We are very proud of our nearly 100-year heritage of teaching in the focused design disciplines we offer and at the same time recognize the reality that such disciplinary boundaries are increasingly permeable and to be successful, designers need to have deep discipline knowledge and a broad range of relevant skills and experience across the creative spectrum.
With this need in mind, the School seeks an enthusiastic multidisciplinary design educator on a tenure track appointment who has skills and expertise across two or more of the disciplinary areas in the School, including those areas that are relevant to all disciplines such as rapid manufacturing, digital content creation or entrepreneurial practice. We also recognize that it is important that designers are able to contextualize their practice with theory as well a historical precedent; it would be desirable if applicants were to bring the skills, experience, and ability to teach classes in both studio practice as well as contextual history and theory.

A terminal degree, teaching experience and professional practice relevant to design.

Job Specific Qualifications

Teaching and advising experience in design studio, history and theory, complemented by professional practice and an established research focus.

The successful candidate will conduct research; teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level across the required and elective curriculum in the School of Design; and service to the school, college and university including help with student advising, student learning outcomes and assessment, and community engagement.
