Job Description

The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications is responsible for handling public relations functions for Syracuse University’s 20-sport intercollegiate athletics program, utilizing written, video, online and social-media channels.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to; providing media training for coaches and student-athletes, serving as a liaison with local and national media, writing press releases and feature stories, maintaining the department’s website (www.Cuse.com) and social media channels, producing digital media guides, record books and game programs, assisting with supervision of interns and student staff, travelling with assigned teams, maintaining statistics and archives, and providing information to the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference and ECAC service bureaus. This position is responsible for the public relations/communications for women’s basketball and other sports as assigned.

A working knowledge of InDesign, PhotoShop, StatCrew statistical software, and the SIDEARM content management system are necessary. Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud preferred. This position also is responsible for supervision of sports assigned to interns/students. Must be able to work nights and weekends. Must have working knowledge of NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rules.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years of experience in a related field.

Job Specific Qualifications

Computer skills required: InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Excel, SIDEARM website administrative updating system, social media, and various statistical software packages for cumulative and in-game statistics. Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.

Interpersonal communication, mentoring, teaching skills required. Ability to manage, direct and complete multiple projects and assignments concurrently.

Extensive writing, editing, desktop publishing, Photoshop, website and social media skills. Video editing preferred.

Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to interact with diverse department, University and community constituencies.

Ability work under deadline pressure.

Extensive and successful experience with personnel management and crisis management.

Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations with practical, hands-on experience in applying Division I regulations.

Responsibilities

Facilitate interviews between coaches, student-athletes and administrative staff and the media. Educate student-athletes and coaches about working with the media, including interviewing techniques, responding to criticism, public speaking and rights and responsibilities. Handle all media inquiries for assigned sports, including women’s basketball, men’s and women’s rowing, and other sports as assigned.

Responsible for assigned sports media operation for home events, including managing the press box, managing social media channels, issuing credentials to qualified individuals, supervising statistics crew and staff to service the media and other guests, monitoring media on the sidelines, facilitating post-game press conferences, and representing Syracuse University to national and local electronic and print media.

Writing, including press releases, daily content for www.Cuse.com, media guide content, social media posts, feature stories for game programs and alumni and donor newsletters. Manage and maintain Department of Athletics archives (hard copy and digital) for assigned sports and athletics department projects, including the ‘Cuse Awards.

Promote and publicize assigned teams locally, nationally and internationally, including serving as liaison with national and local media on a daily basis, including live television broadcasts of athletic events for assigned teams, managing social media channels and utilizing website (Cuse.com). Serve as a liaison and respond to inquiries from media, alumni, boosters and the general public for assigned teams.

Travel with women’s basketball and other sports as assigned, to away contests to service the media and facilitate interviews with student-athletes and coaches, and manage social media channels. Represent Syracuse University at various media days of assigned sports.

Oversee coverage for volleyball and other sports as assigned.

Assist with the supervision of two full-time interns and 16-20 student-assistants.
