Job Description

The Physics Department at Syracuse University is soliciting applications for a post-doc position in the laboratory astrophysics/astrochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Gianfranco Vidali. A highly motivated and accomplished recent PhD graduate is sought to work on NSF-funded, ongoing experiments of molecule formation on analogs of dust grains in simulated space conditions (Please see Prof. Vidali’s research group website for more information on resent research accomplishments: ). The position is for one year. A PhD in Physics or closely related fields is required. The candidate should have working experience in laboratory astrophysics/astrochemistry and/or surface science. Experience in working with ultra-vacuum technology, atomic/molecular beam techniques, and computer simulations is highly prized.
The appointment will begin January 2018.


Required qualification for consideration is PhD in Physics or a related field. The successful candidate will have shown proven research ability. The candidate should have working experience in laboratory astrophysics/astrochemistry and surface science. Experience in working with ultra-vacuum technology, atomic/molecular beam techniques, and computer simulations is highly prized. Computing skills in any of the following are required: Labview and interface software, Mathematica, Python or similar computer languages.

Job Specific Qualifications

Conduct research under the supervision of Gianfranco Vidali on the formation of molecules on analogs of dust grains in simulated astrophysical environments.
He/she will also be responsible for guiding graduate students in their research towards advanced degrees.
