Job Description

The Department of Reading and Language Arts in the School of Education at Syracuse University seeks a full time non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor in College Reading and Learning Strategy Instruction.


An earned doctorate, or completion of doctoral degree by August 2018, in literacy education, learning sciences, curriculum and instruction, special education, educational psychology, or a related field with emphasis in college reading and learning strategy instruction, college writing instruction, adolescent and adult literacy, and/or student learning support services.

Job Specific Qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in college/ university teaching is highly desired as is expertise in student program development and coordination.


The successful candidate will teach multiple sections of college learning strategies and other adolescent and adult literacy-focused courses as needed. The candidate will have possible opportunities to teach introductory courses for the Selected Studies major and courses on college learning support services for the Higher Education program. The candidate will build repertoire with students to establish and maintain effective relationships and a secure, positive classroom environment, both in person and online, that promote active student engagement. The candidate will be responsible for networking with other academic and support services across campus, including Athletics, Veteran Affairs, Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the Writing Center, and the Office of Disability Services. The candidate will develop a stronger partnership with the InclusiveU program in the Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education. In addition, the candidate will train and supervise graduate student assistants who will provide 1-on-1 support for enrolled students in the program.
