Job Description

The Chief Curator leads the educational and exhibition program of the Syracuse University Libraries’ Special Collection Research Center (SCRC). The incumbent will offer hands-on instructional sessions with the collections for undergraduate and graduate students, providing them with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to handle, analyze, and interpret primary source materials in their courses.

This individual will report to the Senior Director of the SCRC and work closely with faculty to foster engagement with collections. They will initiate, coordinate, budget, produce, and supervise SCRC’s annual program of collection-based exhibitions, faculty fellows, visiting scholars, and workshops. As part of the SCRC management team, the Chief Curator will supervise three professional staff and participate in business and strategic planning for the department.

SCRC’s internationally-renowned collections document myriad scientific, political, social, and aesthetic movements from across the globe. We uphold a deep commitment to preserving and providing access to a multi-dimensional historical record that is both deep and broadly diverse, ranging from ancient clay tablets, to early audio recording technologies, and twenty-first-century manuscript collections. Our collection strengths include: activism and social reform, broadcasting history, pulp literature and science fiction, religious and utopian communities, as well as significant holdings in rare books and printed material.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or PhD required in a Humanities discipline or Library Science.

• Significant research experience in one of the SCRC’s collecting areas.

• Three or more years of experience working in an academic library, special collections, or museum setting.

• Minimum one year of experience producing attractive, successful, and informative exhibitions and public programs.

• Minimum one year of teaching experience at the college level.

• Relevant supervisory experience.

• Proven ability to stimulate interest in materials as cultural artifacts and primary sources of research and teaching.

• Knowledge of preservation needs and handling practices for special collections materials.

• Strong commitment to providing high quality public services in a team environment to a culturally and racially diverse campus and visiting researcher community.

• Experience with collection development and management in a special collections library or museum.
• Capacity to work effectively with donors, benefactors and alumni.

• Experience managing complex and long-term project and budgets.

• Record of professional presentation, publication, and leadership in relevant professional or academic organizations.

Responsibilities

Manage the SCRC educational program. Create and deliver custom designed instructional sessions that utilize special collections. Implement strategic plans to assess and continuously improve the SCRC educational program. Communicate the vision and mission of the SCRC through sophisticated writing and public speaking.

Oversee the SCRC exhibitions and special events program. Create and coordinate original collection-based exhibitions. Conceptualize and manage the annual calendar of SCRC programs including student conferences, readings, research grants, workshops and seminars. Manage and coordinate exhibition loans.

Supervise three professional staff (two curators and one conservator/preparator) as well as student and temporary project staff. Collaborate with the SCRC staff, Libraries’ IT, Advancement, and the Libraries’ Communications department in the development of SCRC publicity materials including online exhibitions, special events calendars, digital collection initiatives, and donor materials.

Lead the SCRC Acquisitions Committee in the development of the collections and tracking of acquisitions decisions. Make recommendations on new acquisitions and foster faculty support of new materials. Assist with the cultivation of donor and benefactor relationships and fundraising.

Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the University, and the library profession. Such activities may include actively participating on a team, committee, or special project; chairing or organizing a workshop, conference, or other professional event; providing professional consulting; serving as a conference discussant; and conducting research that results in a publication or conference presentation. Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that enhance knowledge and abilities, and positively affect performance and service contributions.
