Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of University Communications and working in concert with the Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer, the Manager of Media Relations oversees the development and implementation of Media Relations efforts, including the creation of proactive strategic media outreach plans and reactive media responses for Syracuse University.
The manager conceptualizes, executes and evaluates media relations plans, often as part of a broader marketing initiatives.

The manager leads comprehensive strategic media relations efforts interfacing with national, international, regional and local media. This will include developing and making hundreds of proactive pitches and reactive requests annually.


• A bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of professional experience in public relations/public affairs programs, media relations or media.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Experience working in a team-centric operation. Outstanding communication and organizational skills are necessary. This individual must be able to work well with an exceptionally wide range of people including senior executive and administrative staff; faculty; students; media representatives; volunteers and other employees.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, media planning experience, and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with leadership, supervisors, colleagues, and media. Must have strong interpersonal skills. Must move with urgency and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

• Excellent management and organizational skills with good attention to detail and follow up, and has a demonstrated ability in managing staff and teams. Must also have the ability to oversee and execute multiple projects simultaneously while working effectively under the pressure of last minute deadlines and changing priorities. Is proactive and takes initiative. Functions effectively, both independently and as a member of a team, with a willingness to assist with routine and last minute projects.

• Exceptional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential issues. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.


• The manager leads comprehensive strategic media relations efforts interfacing with national, international, regional and local media. This will include developing and making hundreds of proactive pitches and reactive requests annually. Working within cross-functional teams to advance critical strategic goals on behalf of Syracuse University. Collaborates with others to leverage earned media as part of a larger integrated marketing and communications plan.
• Conceptualizes strategic media pitches; writing press releases and related content; managing requests from local, national and international print, broadcast or online media. Ensures that the media relations efforts are implemented and executed in a professional, high quality and strategic way. Assists the SVP/CCO and AVP with, and can have direct responsibility for, a wide range of special projects as needed.
• Serves as a University’s spokesperson when needed in responding to routine inquiries; contributes to the University’s crisis communications activities by leading the development of communications plans, holding statements, media prep documents and background materials as needed.
• Builds and maintains strong relationships with members of the news media both locally and nationally. Regularly measures and reports on results of media relations efforts. Possesses deep understanding of brand stewardship principles. Effectively brings the brand to life through media events, pitches and activities.
• Plans and implements all University media events. This includes news conferences; groundbreaking events that have media components; and dedications, and trustee, faculty and employee programs that require media plans and coverage; Directly oversees the reporting program for the media relations, ensuring that media efforts and accomplishments are effectively communicated internally to various other stakeholders.
• Writes and/or assigns the writing of press releases, media advisories and related content; reviewing industry releases and assessing other media relations requests that come in to the University. The Manager of Media Relations may supervise staff.
