Job Description

The Director of Proposal Support Services in the Office of Research is responsible for Syracuse University’s proposal, research and faculty development efforts and for the coordination of a team approach to support the University’s research mission, and by extension, maintain its classification as an R1 research institution by Carnegie Classification. The Director is responsible for overall implementation of the Proposal Support Services mission to: (1) help faculty build the capabilities and visibility needed to advance their scholarship, research, and creative activities across all career stages, (2) facilitate collaboration around strategic funding opportunities, forming new research teams and alliances while leveraging existing strengths and partnerships, (3) manage the University’s internal funding competitions, which include both internally funded seed grant programs and externally funded limited submissions, (4) manage various Awards and Recognition programs, both internal and external, for proper nominations, transparent competition, and help the preparation of the nomination packages, as appropriate, and (5) enhancing research communications including update and proper management of the VPR web page, research showcase such as annual student symposium or “research week-like” activities, in collaboration with OSP and other personnel to produce research dash board and research publications, as appropriate. The Director is accountable for managing the efforts of all Proposal Support Services members.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred.
• Three years direct management experience.
• Three years of experience in the areas of faculty collaboration, grantsmanship training, proposal development and/or faculty training.
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
• Extensive knowledge of extramural program administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors.
• Demonstrated experience developing competitive grant proposals and analyzing solicitations including the ability to translate technical concepts into a fundable proposal.
• Strong interpersonal and organizations skills with a demonstrated ability to build consensus and lead teams in order to achieve desired outcomes.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Experience with transdisciplinary proposal development and external engagement (e.g., funding agencies, universities, corporations, national labs) at a research-intensive university.
• Management of parallel multiple complex programs and activities in a timely manner with a high degree of quality.
• Proposal review experience, such as experience as a federal agency program officer, rotator, or grants development professional.
• Broad knowledge and understanding of research and scholarly achievement across the broad spectrum of fields found at a research-intensive university.
• Experience leading interdisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

• Develop background information on funding sponsor priorities and programs and learn the research strengths and capabilities at the University.
• Proactively search funding databases for pending announcements and match potential funding opportunities with University capabilities and researcher expertise and disseminate targeted funding opportunities to University researchers in a timely manner.
• Facilitate and maintain relationships between funding agency program officers and University researchers.
• Develop strategy to form teams for pursuing large multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary initiatives, and provide leadership to these teams as they develop their proposals.
• Provide educational workshops, in-service trainings, and consultation to faculty and research staff to refine grant-writing skills, and provide the essential tools needed to effectively write and win competitive grant applications.
• Coordinate and plan proposal development activities including prioritization, planning, and scheduling activities to guide faculty effectively through the application process.
• Manage the overall limited submission process including the internally funded grants programs, as well as, manage internal competitions for externally sponsored limited submissions.
• Oversee grant writing and editorial services, to assist faculty in drafting competitive proposals and to analyze feedback from granting agencies to assist faculty with the revision process.
• Develop and oversee faculty recognition initiatives to incentivize research excellence; and assist the VPR with enhancing communication strategies, (e.g.- website updates, “research week” poster sessions, etc.)
• Catalog and maintain an inventory of the University’s research equipment and instrumentation infrastructure to foster greater collaboration among different units and to leverage the University’s capabilities for future proposal development.
