Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Enrollment and the Student Experience, this individual will provide strategic and innovative leadership and operational management to retain, educate, develop, and graduate a highly qualified and increasingly diverse group of students. Formulate, execute, and continuously assess a seamless and forward-looking student experience from first point of contact to graduation that stems from and extends the mission, goals, and aspirations of the university for student affairs.

Provide leadership, oversight, and supervision to the Student Experience side of the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience with responsibility for Health Services, Residence Life, Student Assistance, Counseling Center, Health Promotion, Recreation Services, Multicultural Affairs, LGBT Resource Center, Slutzker Center for International Services, Student Rights and Responsibilities Office, Disability Cultural Center, Off-Campus and Commuter Services, Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Parent’s Office, and the Student Activities Office.


• Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field required and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration, student life, and related leadership experience.

• History of success and progressively responsible positions of leadership within Student Affairs in higher education. Experience overseeing a broad range of student programs within higher education is preferred.

• Experience in developing, implementing, and assessing student success strategies, goals, and outcomes.

• The ideal candidate will be experienced, creative, compassionate, and a proven leader who has solid operational knowledge of and demonstrated, documented success in leading and managing the major elements of the Student Experience portfolio. The ideal candidate will also possess a strong knowledge of and dedication towards best practices, as well as demonstrated leadership ability in working with a range of professional staff, faculty, parents and guardians, senior administrative colleagues, other campus constituents, and external organizations.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Strong financial management ability including budget preparation and resource allocation.

• Supervisory experience in guiding, leading, and motivating a team of individuals and working collaboratively as a member of a senior leadership team.

• Commitment and experience working on campus climate issues including equity, diversity, and inclusivity within a higher education environment.

• Possess an in-depth understanding of current policies, procedures, regulations and trends relative to student affairs and possess an in-depth understanding of best practices in student affairs and retention of traditional and non-traditional student populations.

• Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills including the ability to listen, communicate, and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and possess the ability to work creatively with faculty and staff on outcomes-focused student retention efforts.

• Inspire trust, instill confidence, and demonstrate integrity, accountability, fiscal responsibility, and achievement of goals.

• Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills coupled with the ability to communicate with a diverse student population, demonstrating integrity and strong leadership, and the willingness to be part of a collaborative team.

• Promote a strong commitment to keeping student welfare always at the forefront with a proven capacity for embedding student life priorities within institutional values and aspirations.


• Cultivate an enhanced, inclusive, and engaging student experience that supports SU’s campus life. Responsible for supporting the success of all students by leading the University’s initiatives to create and sustain a campus culture and climate that welcomes and embraces diversity and inclusion of all members.

• As a senior member of the Enrollment and Student Experience leadership team, lead and participate in planning, program evaluation, budget development, and policy formation that will enhance learning outside of the classroom. Leadership will consist of personnel supervision and evaluation, budget planning and oversight, assessment, technology planning, service excellence, crisis management, and collaboration with other units, faculty and staff.

• Provide strategic leadership and operational management to develop and implement a comprehensive student experience portfolio that focuses on sustained, positive results in retaining and graduating an academically strong and diverse student body in alignment with SU’s goals.

• Promote the student experience through advocacy and academic support, diversity and inclusion education, leadership, development, and mentoring that provides opportunities for intentional student engagement. Create collaborative relationships through programming efforts. Promote a healthy and positive campus climate. Work collaboratively to build relationships with faculty and staff in order to enhance learning and campus climate inside and outside the classroom.

• Responsible for the Student Experience budget and creating systems for successful implementation and monitoring of related finances. Provide strategic budget development and review/analyze individual department budgets within portfolio.

• Work closely with the Sr. Associate VP Enrollment and Assistant Provost & Dean of Student Success to develop and implement student transition and retention programs. Review and analyze retention and matriculation data to assist with evaluating programs, policies, and processes related to all student populations.

• Use best practices and a forward thinking approach that anticipates future trends, challenges and priorities.

• Manage the recruitment, training, supervision, professional development and evaluation of Student Experience staff.
