We are seeking to hire a Staff Therapist to Student Athletes and the General Student Population. This position is consider 11 months with the month of June off.

As a Staff Therapist, this position will be physically located within the athletic department 50% of the time, providing direct mental health services to Syracuse University student athletes. Specific responsibility in this capacity will include providing individual short term therapy to student athletes and consulting with the various student athlete support staff in the athletic department (athletic trainers, team physicians, etc.).

The remaining 50% of the time, this position will be physically located at the Counseling Center’s on-campus office. Specific responsibility in this capacity may include maintaining a small caseload of non-student athletes, participating in the Counseling Center’s walk-in system, leading a therapy group, and/or participating in relevant Counseling Center committees.

As with all Counseling Center staff therapists, this position will be responsible for providing generalist mental health services including the provision of short-term therapy, group therapy, consultation, educational/preventative outreach programming, and participation in the Center’s on-call rotation. While performance related issues may occasionally be addressed, the primary focus of this work is the provision of mental health services. Additional responsibilities specific to provision of student athlete services may include provision of outreach/educational programming provided to student athletes and members of the athletic department.

Qualifications

• Masters of Counseling or in a mental health discipline (e.g., clinical or counseling psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or counselor education).

• Minimum three (3) years of experience providing direct clinical service.

• Must be licensed or licensed eligible within the state of New York.

• Experience working with student athletes and familiarity with the culture and nature of Division I athletics programs preferred.

• The ability to work with and provide clinical services to culturally diverse client populations.

• Experience with crisis intervention and the ability to conduct risk assessments and manage potentially high risk clients required.

• Experience providing group therapy.

• Experience with trauma informed care, substance abuse treatment, and/or provision of services related to eating disorders preferred but not required.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Excellent time management skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in developing outreach education programming.

Job Specific Qualifications

Staff therapists must demonstrate high levels of cultural competency, be well versed in working with students from a variety of traditionally under-served and/or underrepresented backgrounds, and demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, social justice work.

As a Staff Therapist, this individual will understand the student athlete experience, understand the culture and nature of intercollegiate athletics, and be able to provide mental health service to athletes.

Responsibilities

Provision of mental health services (including assessment, therapy, and crisis management) to Syracuse University student athletes, physically located within the athletic department.

Timely completion of appropriate clinical documentation, case management, coordination of support services and care with other offices throughout the university, specifically those housed within the athletic department and associated with providing support services to student athletes.

Provision of direct clinical services within the Counseling Center’s on-campus location. These services may include group therapy, walk-in coverage, and/or maintaining a small caseload of non-student athletes.

Participate on relevant committees and/or teams that have the mission of promoting health and wellness in regards to mental health, substance abuse, and/or sexual assault and relationship violence, particularly as these topics relate to student athletes. Provide outreach/education to the university community on a variety of mental health topics, with a specific focus on providing these services to student athletes, support staff that work with student athletes, and/or coaching staffs.

Participate in the Counseling Center’s on-call rotation
