Job Description

The Academic Advisor Coordinator – Military Students will be responsible for implementing the plan to standardize Joint Service Transcript (JST) evaluation and credit awarding for active military and veterans applying to/entering Syracuse University. JSTevaluation and advising is essential to the success of military-connected students enrolled in residential and online undergraduate programs. The Academic Advisor Coordinator – Military Students will ensure that uniform standards are used to award credit based on military service and that students are awarded the correct amount of credit for their military experiences, based on the documentation that students provide. The Academic Advisor Coordinator – Military Students will assist current and prospective active duty and veteran students to evaluate academic transcripts, JSTs, and American Council on Education (ACE) transcripts for appropriate credit awarding. The Academic Advisor Coordinator – Military Students will maintain the system created to record and track JST credit award/transfer decisions, and participate in strategic planning specific to active military and veteran student support. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required
• 4 years of professional career or academic advising experience
• Experience in military skill assessment and the translation of military service transcripts required
• Prior service in the United States military preferred
• Organization, planning and project management experience preferred

Job Specific Qualifications

• Expert demonstrable knowledge of and experience working with the ACE Credit Registry and Transcript system.
• Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with higher education academic advising practices.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work with an active military and veteran population of students; ability to problem-solve and liaise with the broader University community on behalf of students, in-depth knowledge of the University rules and regulations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft office and other technology used in student service delivery.

Responsibilities

• Assist current and prospective active military and veteran students using face to face communication, phone, email and online advising methods to evaluate academic transcripts, military training transcripts, and American Council on Education (ACE) transcripts for appropriate awarding/transfer at Syracuse University; Ensure that uniform standards are used to award credit based on military service and that students are awarded the correct amount of credit for their military experiences, based on the documentation that students provide;
• Provide academic advising to new and returning active military and veteran students; Interpret requirements for SU schools and colleges degree programs and advise students of requirements; Advise and monitor student’s progress toward completion of degree program through various means (in-person, phone, fax, virtual, mail, email); Inform active military and veteran students of support services, administrative processes, and other academic programs at Syracuse University; Maintain student files, monitor degree audits, and provide academic advising to residential and online students.
• Serve as the Syracuse University subject-matter-expert on the ACE Credit Registry and Transcript system, changes, and initiatives; Maintain and improve the systems and policies for evaluating military training transcripts and awarding credit for Syracuse University academic programs; Coordinate activities and initiatives with the Office of Veterans and Military Affairs and other departments engaged in active military and veteran student recruitment, support and retention.
• Training the Schools/Colleges to which students are admitted to use the established transfer credit evaluation tool
