Job Description

The Newhouse Career Development Center is currently seeking a career counselor to deliver services to students enrolled in its various communications majors. The career counselor is responsible for counseling and training students on career skills, assisting in employer relations efforts, handling the career center’s use of the University’s career services management system, as well as supporting special events. This individual acts as a liaison to the appropriate academic and co-curricular communities at Syracuse University, as well as to employer partners locally and nationally.


• Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of relevant experience in a university or graduate/professional school career services office.
• Experience using career services technology environments or other similar systems is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Verbal and written communication skills including student and business correspondence, as well as the ability to use modern communication tools such as blogs, video and social media.
• Strong advising and teaching abilities effective across a diverse population, particularly in the realms of professional development, career exploration and decision-making, and job/internship searches.
• Capacity to balance multiple and varied tasks, meet deadlines, and use well-developed time management and organizational skills.
• Discretion when accessing and handling confidential information.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook and ability to learn new technologies.
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends (career fairs, workshops, employer visits, events) and travel for conferences, events and relationship development.


• Counseling, Advising, & Coaching: Provide career counseling, advising, or coaching to students and alumni regarding career issues (e.g. internship searches, career transitions, resume/application material critiques, job search strategies, networking tips, interview preparation).
• Teaching & Training: Lead career skills training workshops that facilitate skill development and exploration of the communications industry. Present and deliver training using contemporary best practices. Create new programming to address needs of new student populations.
• Employer Relations: Support planning of special events through employer outreach, including the Newhouse Fall Career Fair and spring Newhouse Recruitment Collective, as well as employer information sessions as needed. Develop and sustain relationships across Syracuse University and the external community to support the success of programs and events. Take ownership of career center’s use of career service management system for data collection and reporting.
• Innovation & Strategy: Think creatively about the professional development and educational experience for students and alumni. Pilot creative approaches to building relationships with employers and solidifying partnerships.
