Job Description

Function of Department: The Office of Residence Life (ORL) is an integral part of the educational program and academic support services of Syracuse University. It is designed as an essential operation and service organization requiring specialized knowledge to coordinate the areas of counseling and referral, educational programming, physical plant and security, marketing, student satisfaction, and public relations for university residents.
ORL is responsible for providing a quality, comprehensive program in the undergraduate and graduate housing, residence life, and student development and enhances the academic climate of the university.

Purpose of Position: The Graduate Assistant (GA) for the STEM Residential College is a collaborative position with the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Learning Communities that assists in the development and implementation of programs and other initiatives to assist Shaw first year students with their transition to college life and to enhance the sophomore experience in the Residential College. This position works with and supports the overall daily operations of Shaw and Lyons Halls. The responsibilities include: developing resources that support student learning in the Residential College, working with the Shaw/Lyons Senior Staff to develop individualized Residential Learning Curriculum expectations, advising Shaw and Lyons Residence Hall Association, adjudicating policy violations, and assisting in the supervision of Shaw Hall resident advisor staff. The GA is responsible for maintaining close working relationships with a variety of offices and departments of the University and supporting the mission of the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience.

Qualifications

• Possess experience in Residence Life and/or Student Affairs.
• Interest in working with students in higher education environments.
• Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a team, including staff and students.
• Matriculated in a Syracuse University graduate program

This position requires some week night and weekend commitments. This is an academic year position beginning mid-August and ending mid-May.

Responsibilities

A. Residence Education in the STEM Residential College:
• Participates in the implementation of residence hall opening and Syracuse Welcome at the beginning of the academic year.
• Assist with and support the programmatic goals of the learning communities within the Residential College (Including but not limited to: plan, implement, and assess faculty/staff house call initiatives and/or faculty/staff late night breakfast, learning community welcome & opening activities)
• Implementation of the Residential Learning Curriclum in the Residential College along with other programs that enhance student learning for students living in Shaw Hall.
• Adjudicate lower level conduct cases in the residence halls.
• Advise the Shaw/Lyons Residence Hall Association.
• Assist in the functional supervision of resident advisors and learning community resident advisors.
• Advise STEM First Generation Peer Mentors in conjunction with the Assistant Director of the Office of Learning Communities.
• Assist with other duties as directed by the Assistant Director of the Office of Learning Communities.
• Other educational duties as determined based on student needs.

B. Administrative Responsibilities & Training:
• Attend ORL Area Meetings, departmental meetings, LC Team meetings, and RA staff meetings as appropriate.
• Participate in paraprofessional training and in-hall training as directed by the Residence Director
• Serves as an active member of one Office of Residence Life Committee
• Participate in RA Selection activities as appropriate.
• Management of monthly procurement card reconciliation reports.
• Assists with the design and execution of Peer Mentor training in conjunction with the Assistant Director of the Office of Learning Communities.

C. Professional Development:
• Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.
• Serves on University and Divisional committees as requested.
• Participates in Enrollment and the Student Experience Orientation Program.
• Adheres to Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) and American College Personnel Administrator’s (ACPA) ethical standards.
